Bratwurst with Sauerkraut

  • 2 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 tspn vegetable oil
  • 200 gm sauerkraut (from a jar or tin), drained
  • 1 small apple, peeled and grated
  • ½ tspn caraway seeds
  • Knob of butter
  • 1 tspn sugar
  • German mustard, to serve

Method

  1. 1

    Heat the butter in a small saucepan. Add the drained sauerkraut, grated apple, caraway seeds and sugar.

    Cook gently over a low heat for , stirring occasionally.

    Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the bratwurst over a medium heat, turning regularly, for until golden brown and cooked through.

    Spoon the warm sauerkraut onto a plate and lay the bratwurst on top.

    Serve with a generous dollop of German mustard.

Notes

  • The grated apple softens the sharpness of the sauerkraut.
  • Serve with mashed potato or crusty bread.
  • Any good quality pork sausage works if bratwurst is not available.
