Bratwurst with Sauerkraut
Pan-fried German sausages served on a bed of warm, tangy sauerkraut with mustard.
Ingredients
- 2 bratwurst sausages
- 1 tspn vegetable oil
- 200 gm sauerkraut (from a jar or tin), drained
- 1 small apple, peeled and grated
- ½ tspn caraway seeds
- Knob of butter
- 1 tspn sugar
- German mustard, to serve
Method

Heat the butter in a small saucepan. Add the drained sauerkraut, grated apple, caraway seeds and sugar.

Cook gently over a low heat for , stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the bratwurst over a medium heat, turning regularly, for until golden brown and cooked through.

Spoon the warm sauerkraut onto a plate and lay the bratwurst on top.

Serve with a generous dollop of German mustard.
Notes
- The grated apple softens the sharpness of the sauerkraut.
- Serve with mashed potato or crusty bread.
- Any good quality pork sausage works if bratwurst is not available.
